Mike Shinoda’s LEARNING NOT TO DROWN Playlist

Ready for something fun?

In a movie, everything is completed for you and handed to you – music, details of the setting, what the characters look like, how their voices sound.  But books let the reader finish the story, fill in the details based on their own experiences and tastes.   So, when my friends over at Atheneum/Simon & Schuster asked me if I’d like to put together a soundtrack for Learning Not to Drown, I politely declined.  I don’t want to tell anyone what kind of music Clare and her friends might be listening to because part of the magic is that the readers can fill their soundtrack.

However, when I told my husband Mike about the idea, he got excited.  “I want to do that.  It’d be fun to put together a playlist of what I think Clare would listen to.”

So….if you are wondering what songs were bouncing around in Mike Shinoda’s head when he read Learning Not To Drown, here is his playlist:

Arcade Fire – Here Comes The Night Time
CHVRCHES – Tether
Haim – Send Me Down
Beach House – Myth
Santigold – The Riot’s Gone
Cat Power – Sun
M83 – We Own The Sky
Bon Iver – Perth
Beach House – Wild
Metric – Speed The Collapse
London Grammar – Strong
Warpaint – Love Is to Die
The Hundred In The Hands – Keep It Low
Fiona Apple – Never Is A Promise

And now, your turn…. what songs would you put on Learning Not to Drown‘s soundtrack?

The playlist is truly amazing… Can I point out that ‘Powerless’ by Linkin Park seems to be specifically about LNTD? It even mentions Skeleton and the blood drops and everything… Was the song inspired by Mike reading your novel?

  3. I do not know you personally, but if I could see and talk with you, I think I would be crying with happiness … with Mike because I listen to Linkin Park for 10 years, with you because as I, you write books … I mean, I’m writing in the drawer, but I dream of release of its own … I think that Mike has always been crazy, especially when it comes to music, and it’s probably not surprising that he choose songs to your book. I want to buy it, but I do not know how to do it … by the way I educate my English, which is weak : (
You are my inspiration to learn the language and the desire to listen to the songs sitting in Mike head when he reads Learning Not To Drown! 🙂

Ok so, my soundtrack to the book may be a little too different from Mike’s but here it is (in no particular order):

    — Survive by Rise Against (I love this band, mostly cause of their lyrics and I thought this song was perfect for Clare with all she was going through so -I’m quoting the lyrics here- “How we survive is what makes us who we are” thought it suits her perfectly)
    — Warmness On The Soul by Avenged Sevenfold
    — Faith, Love and Happiness by Thousand Foot Krutch
    — Moments Forever Faded by Funeral For A Friend
    — Gone Sovereigh/Absolute Zero by Stone Sour
    — Same Old Story by Pennywise
    — Temper Temper by Bullet For My Valentine
    — Basket Case by Green Day
